Stepping Away From the Screen: Embracing Ecotherapy for Personal Growth

SAN JOSE, CA, March 7, 2024 - The modern world exists because of technology: from mobile phones giving us the superpower to communicate with anyone instantaneously to being able to access your bank account with the click of a button, it’s no wonder why we’re all so sucked into our screens. Many of us rely on these advancements to make a living, especially with an increase in remote positions. Despite all its advantages, the importance of disconnecting from the Internet and reconnecting with nature has never been more pivotal.

Research has uncovered that taking the time to step away from digital distractions like social media and your email box are extremely beneficial for the human mind, body and soul. Immersion into the natural world has the capability to reduce stress levels, enhance wellbeing and improve one’s disposition. This isn’t particularly surprising, as high levels of screen time have been associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders.

On top of the mood boost, delegating even 20 minutes of ecotherapy into your busy schedule has been proven to increase productivity and lengthen attention span; this is especially relevant with Generation Z, whose emergence into adulthood and the workplace has been scrutinized and stereotyped as consisting of lazy and unmotivated workers. When we have the world at our fingertips, and don’t have to physically move around to explore it, who can blame us for losing this drive sometimes.

In a time where self improvement is the hottest trend and everyone wants to match the influencers showcasing their “perfect” lifestyles, it’s important to remember that immersion with the natural world is just as important as a balanced diet and consistent sleep routine. Venturing outside promotes physical activity in a much less stressful and daunting way than the gym; whether it be rock climbing or simply strolling through the park, the motion these activities promote improves the health of the cardiovascular and immune systems.

This notion isn’t anything new. We are told since childhood to get out of the house and go play outside. However, as we grow up and our to-do lists become increasingly more demanding, this lesson is often lost or discarded. All work and no relaxation can become melancholy and isolating. It won’t kill you to step away from the computer, even when you’re stressed about a deadline, to put yourself first. In fact, this escape into the natural world is more likely to bring senses of clarity and purpose, which will allow you to get what you need done more efficiently and effortlessly when revisited.

These ideals are ones that are exemplified by the values regarding work life balance at Contingenci by Good Human. On top of working to save the planet by ending global garment pollution and reducing the quantity of the world’s deadstock, founder Linda Tang frequently engages and connects outside of the office with employees through retreats. Through partaking in frequent camping trips, these excursions allow for connection with nature, allot time away from the stress and demand of the workweek and lead to the creation of genuine friendship, which make returning to the workplace a more exciting and anticipated task.

This concept of ecotherapy is one I have only been able to truly appreciate within the past few months. As a graduate student, any time I’m not working almost feels wasteful. However, taking the time to drive to the beach a few times per week to watch the sunset has changed my life. Whether it be to reduce stress, escape from my workload or even just lay my eyes on something pretty, this habit reminds me there is so much more to the universe than an intimidating week. If you bury yourself into your work and refuse to come up for a breather, you’ll never get your head above water and you might forget about the fresh air.
